I hate April the 1st

I really should avoid going on the internet on April the 1st. What’s true and what’s not?

First up, a bunch of Muse fansites have teamed up and said they’ve all received a letter from warner music telling them to close and remove lyrics/tabs/the word muse from their domain names etc. (I’m ashamed to admit I fell for this one…).

Secondly NME.com had a news item about a certain band being the first to announce a gig in space, yep… you guessed it Muse again! I never fell for this one…

Finally, good old Google announced Google TiSP. Free internet for everyone, a little installation needed.

So far that’s all I’ve spotted so far, I’ve only been online for about 10 minutes though. Don’t worry, there wont be any cheap tricks from Rawkstar this year (mainly because I forgot about it and couldn’t think of anything…).

New design!

I’ve finally got around to making a custom design for the blog. It now looks like the podcasts site. This was originally planned for the main rawkstar site design, which I created a few mock ups for about a year ago… Now it’s live on the blog and the podcasts page it shouldn’t be long before it’s on the forum and the main site!

Anyway, any comments or criticisms just tell me here! Same goes for any bugs/oddities you spot.

Mime: Natalie Imbruglia – Torn

Look at this – It’s a live(ish) version of “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia, she gets on stage with a mime who acts out her song – She even joins in with the actions near the end… The guitar solo bit is rather amusing too (even though it’s technically incorrect…).

Random Fact #119203 – David Ford played guitar on Natalie’s 3rd album “Counting Down the Days” which helped fund his solo album “I Sincerely Apologise for all the Trouble I’ve Caused” (More info).

2007: Everything Sounds Like Coldplay Now

(Was going to be a) Review: Razorlight – Before I Fall To Pieces EP

…Because we’re not all quite sick of this song already. Actually, no, I jest, but you have to admit that, like all Razorlight EPs to date, it’s had a huge amount of airplay.

Why all the airplay? Well, although (contrary to rumours) millions of people can actually be wrong, the song’s quite catchy. Hell, you all know it’s catchy, you’ve probably got it right up there in your head, ready to be pulled down at any moment as the situation may demand.

So, next question: why the review? They covered Teenage Kicks (by the Undertones, and incidentally John Peel’s favourite song) for track 2, and an audacious attempt like that deserves, nay begs for review. They’re joining an odd bunch of melody-thieves, since bands like Green Day and Therapy? and Ash have also covered this track. Oh, and so has B*sted. Apologies for the cuss-word, but the disparity has to be noted.

The very first thing to note is that it’s a live recording. The first thing this calls to mind is America. Not the country, duh, but the single. Remember the fan-screams mixed in at the beginning? That seems to be a recurring theme. They want us to believe that they’re a bona fide proper proper non-commercialised band who can actually play live shows, which is what sells more records.

A quick reaction here: does this mean we should like them (like the mugs we are) or hate them (like the musical snobs we are)?

Anyway, the second thing to note is that their version sounds… well, just like the old version. Just like the other versions. A version. Nothing to see here, folks.

But wait, let’s not go too far. Okay, let’s admit it, Razorlight are good. Take that as a given, if you will. You know they’re good, I know they’re good, all our friends know they’re good, the record industry knows that they’re good, and everyone’s all cool with them being good.

Thing is, all the other bands know they’re good, too. And they’re trying to piggyback on that Razorlight magic, that skinny-trousered Russell-Brand-haired pretend-rebellion. Listen to any “up and coming” list/ compilation / etc, and you’ll find hours and hours of Razorlight-esq posing. It’s getting hard to sift the good from the mediocre from the downright dull. It’s a whole other argument, the “Internet music: for good or for bad?” argument, but one thread of that discussion is very useful here: there’s definitely room to argue that we’ve been flooded with too much of a good thing.

British Indie Rock is all starting to look the same. There are too many bands out there, all being heard at the same time, all with their dedicated little street teams and thousand-fold adoring MySpace friends. All sending out their damn pointless and annoyingly desperate MySpace bulletins, and all ultimately grasping at the same straws. Think endless bad promos from the increasingly-desperate Lorraine, and you’re in the right frame of mind.

Everything sounds alike. The Scissor Sisters sound just like Beck (and why oh why does nobody ever point this out?), Busted sound like Green Day, and now Razorlight are trying to sound like The Undertones. New music is not just the same as old music, but it’s the same as all the other new music.

And now we don’t even have the brilliant old-as-time sure-fire way of kicking them out – even if you don’t buy their music, you can’t avoid seeing these pillocks all over the inter-web. They don’t need your money any more. They’re like some weird mutant brand of phoenix – kick one down, and three pop up to take its place. It’s like a horror movie. Revenge of the Russell Brand-a-likes. (More on that cnut later)

God knows how fast Peelie’s spinning in his grave now, but by the end of the year he’ll be able to provide electricity for a street of terraced houses. [/cliche]

Happy new year!

A belated happy new year from rawkstar!

Well i’ve been busy tweaking the design of the site, which will go mostly unnoticed but the world of music hasn’t gone unnoticed, and 2007 should see the return of some of our favourite bands.

The bands we’re looking forward to hearing from this year are:-

The Smashing Pumpkins – Yes, Billy Corgan and friends have got back together to reform the Smashing Pumpkins, as yet the actual reunited lineup is still unknown! Will D’arcy return? Links: smashingpumpkins.com / MySpace.

Idlewild – They’ve already announced a tour, single and album

I’ll also have to put in the news that Muse will be one of the first bands to play the brand spanking new Wembley Stadium, no less than 2 nights as well!! The first night sold out in a matter of hours and the 2nd night only has the seats about a mile from the stage left.

The BBC have also put up their upcoming bands for 2007 list, check it out!

Anything/anyone else you’re looking forward to seeing/hearing new material from in 2007? Tell us in the comments!

Who the BPI really should sue…

I haven’t written one of these yet, well I haven’t written much of anything but this was a bandwagon I had yet to jump on. Since I’m finding it quite amusing that lots of people seem to aimlessly post their wholly uninteresting thoughts into the world for others to.. well.. ignore, I thought if I got involved the whole thing might eventually implode.

Wait, I’m supposed to talk about music aren’t I. Umm…

“I was thinking that instead of the music industry suing all the people downloading music illegally, why can’t they sue all the people who listen to their walkman/iPod too loudly and annoy me every single day with their shit taste in music and out of time foot tapping. I’m pretty sure that unlicensed ‘public performance’ of music constitutes as a breech of copyright in some way and you know what, I’d report every single one of them – as long as I can be the one that stamps their expensive piece of conspicuous consumption into the dirt.”

Will that do?

Theirspace #1

Hey there everyone. Guess someone needs to show some love to the blog, so it’s the perfect opportunity to use it as a basis for a feature of sorts. Somewhere that our loving webmaster/editor Bob doesn’t have to work his fingers to the bone creating and editing .php for it. He likes it really though… masochist….

So this is a little thing I’d like to call Theirspace. It first featured on the ill fated/underground (delete as applicable) radio show I ran on Wave of Oscillation. It’s a regular look at the world of MySpace and the bands that populate it – of course to discuss all the bands on MySpace would take forever. No, hopefully by coming here you can take a look at five bands who’s work I’ve come across and enjoyed each week. There are ground rules to this, however;

1) Big bands of course are getting overlooked. What’s the point in telling you that someone like Pete Doherty’s got a MySpace account and releasing his latest heroin addled car crash when of course someone here would report it as news, or you’ve already heard it already
2) Cover bands, as much as I love them, won’t be getting a look in. That’s simply because there are a lot of musicians out there who are busting a nut writing original material. As harsh as it seems, I don’t care if you’ve managed to turn the “funeral march” into a Polyphonic Spree song, it’s a cover.

With that all said….

1: Verdant Skies (www.myspace.com/verdantskies)
Genre: Ambient/Electronica/Downtempo
Location: Ollerton, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom
Standout Track: Ortuo
Verdant Skies started off as a simple side project, but looks to have overtaken the popularity of the band it was originally on the side of. Co-created by Hudson guitarist Ant Whitton with Jim Kirk, the project is heavily influenced by the post rock work of Boards of Canada and Sigur Rós, bands Whitton himself has professed to having a love for. They rocketed up to the Number One Music charts and there is expectation around the Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire music scene for a CD to be released. There’s been little talk of doing some live shows, with Whitton’s loyalty to Hudson fierce – the group hopefully embarking on some more live dates showcasing their at times Sonic Youth inspired post grunge.

2: Laymar (www.myspace.com/laymarmusic)
Genre: Experimental/Alternative/Progressive
Location: London, United Kingdom
Standout Track: JWL vers 32 demo

After taking a listen to their lo-fi demo I received through the post, I decidedly took their advice to visit their MySpace site. It was there I came across two different tracks omitted from the CD – a demo version of Juvenile Whole Life which thanks to it’s rough recording sounded twice as haunting as the version on their CD. Laymar are definitely worth taking a listen to on MySpace; much like Verdant Skies, their possibility and potential seems very positive in the months to come.

3: Soulkut (www.myspace.com/soulkut)
Genre: Trip Hop/Turntablism
Location: Lyon, France
Standout Track: The Trigger

At 24 years of age, the potential of turntablist Soulkut could be unrivaled. Not content with the promotion of music in his native Lyon, Soulkut gathered together different DJ’s, breakdancers and graffiti artists to help promote new talent within the area, going under the name “800 Industrie”. He found turntablism after working within the reaches of a hip hop act, which was what he called “an important discovery”. Mixing a eurodance style with big beat synths and trip-hop/breakbeat beats, this mish-mash of dance genres makes a funky outlet – The Trigger may be his only track available so far, but it’s garnered the attention of dance indie label Elektrotribe. He is also becoming a renowned producer in France, having worked with K.NAI to produce some tracks for his last album

4: Waif du Jour (www.myspace.com/waifdujour)
Genre: Electroclash/Trip Hop
Location: United Kingdom
Standout Track: Waif du Jour
Avant-garde and every bit as arty as their graphical design, Waif du Jour are either the most pretentiously good electroclash bands on MySpace, or possibly one clever attack on the indie/electronica ideals of present day. Either way, their music is exceptional, with their electroclash a combination of biting social commentary, very comical lyrics and an almost perfect take on the eighties dance/eurodance genre. The cite that they sound like “1990’s chart hits fished out of a 2nd hand bucket“, which is somewhat of an accurate description – only, with a glass half full mentality attached to that. Very fun and one to add to your friends, if not for the remarkable “thank you” comments complete with personalised artwork of your MySpace name.

5: Proxy (www.myspace.com/proxybyproxy)
Genre: Rock/Indie/Alternative
Location: London, United Kingdom
Standout Track: Jetlag

Proof not every band wants to sound like Arctic Monkeys. This band sound like they want to be almost like The Kooks at times, which is acceptable… odd choice… but acceptable. Aside from that, Proxy are a good, old fashioned, uncomplicated alternative rock band with their three chord progressions and stop/start melodies. It is very catchy, however, and breathes life into indie bands on MySpace as it shows their not all following a formulaic approach singing about what the common man would do. There are tales about girls, but it packs a power pop punch, and it’s fun – which ultimately should be part of why you’re searching MySpace for music anyway

There’s five for you, but if you think you’re band deserves a shout on TheirSpace and you, as many, many, many people do, have a MySpace page with tracks on, you can give me a shout at ben@rawkstar.net. Please also, if you are reviewed and are pleased with our account, have the good grace of including Rawkstar.net in your top five MySpace friends list, or even a banner!

Till next week!

Bands, PR Companies, even casual readers of the site. Two important things to put forward:

1) We are hoping to launch a Podcast/Streaming Audio show in the near future. However, we would rather not want to play chance with the law, so do not be alarmed if you at some point recieve and e-mail asking for permission to be included. If you really would like to be part of a happening Podcast the by all means write to the usual address:

2) We don’t charge a thing, we don’t have needless pop ups and at no point did we sell any part of the site for advertising or any other kind of shill. We would hope, however, that if you’ve been reviewed or even love coming to read the reviews at find out how bad Rod’s New Car could get – very soon there will be banners available for use. Oh please, oh please, find it in your hearts to add them to you’re website, you’re MySpace account (Hell, if you include us in your’ Top 8 you could win a prize) or even as part of your signature at any forums you visit, we would really appreciate those gestures.

Anyway – now I can use the blog, expect “TheirSpace” features to appear shortly!

Scarlett Rivers

Whilst out last night I saw a quite decent solo artist by the name of Jason Wakefield, otherwise known as Scarlett Rivers. I won’t be doing a review of the night but I just wanted to say that this guy was really good. Here is his MySpace:

http://www.myspace.com/jasonwakefieldinscarlettrivers

As I said, he is a solo artist. He plays the piano like some kind of crazy guy (much like Matt Belamy really), anyway you should give him a listen.
